How would you describe your style?
My style is a creative blend of photojournalism and beautiful portraiture.
During moments where you’re getting ready, I stay out of the way and capture the day as it unfolds. I may ask you to step into better lighting or suggest an idea for a picture, but I will never stage a photo of an event that I believe would otherwise never happen.
During free time, I love capturing beautiful portraits of my couples. If you’ve seen my portrait work at www.hanelchoi.com, you’ll know I love portraiture! Shooting portraits outside of weddings has taught me to really know how to pose people to make them look naturally amazing. It has also taught me to control light to create mood and atmosphere.
When it comes to lighting, I don’t have a preference between using natural light or professional lighting. It all depends on what is available and what looks best. To me, my on-location lights are my paintbrushes, and light is my paint. I get excited about creating images using flash that transform any location to something magical. I’m a bit geeky like that.
Our wedding is far away, but we love your work. How far do you travel?
I love traveling to weddings! I am available to shoot weddings world wide, so no matter where you’re saying your vows, I can be there to capture it. Travel fees (usually) apply.
How long does it take for us to get our photos?
For engagement sessions, you’ll get your photos within 4 weeks. For weddings, within 4-6 weeks.
We LOVE your work, but can’t afford you…
I guess technically that’s not a question. If you truly love my work but can’t afford my packages, send me an intro and tell me your story!
What cultural weddings are you experienced in shooting?
My team and I have shot many cultural weddings, including Jewish, Indian, Chinese, Korean, Irish, and more! We love all things cultural and take pride in being able to capture the intricate, uniquely beautiful traditions of all our clients’ cultures.
Not all of our family or friends speak English. What languages do you speak?
Being born in NYC, having lived in Korea, China, and Russia, I take pride in being able to connect with a variety of clients and their family & friends. I am fluent in English, conversationally-fluent in Korean, and can speak a little Chinese, Russian, and Spanish. My second shooters and assistants are fluent in Korean or Chinese (or both!).
Are you insured? Our venue requires all vendors to carry insurance.
My company is insured and I can provide your venue with a certificate if needed.
What cameras do you use?
I get this question a lot, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s on a “What to Ask Your Wedding Photographer During Consultations” list. To be honest, it really doesn’t matter what a photographer uses as long as they are professional grade and the resulting images fit your style.
That said, weddings are a one-in-a-lifetime event that are invaluable and irreplaceable. That’s why I personally use Canon professional tier full frame cameras with Sigma Art series lenses. I also make sure to show up to every wedding prepared with backups.
All of my packages include a talented second photographer. That’s because in addition to helping to get images of an event from multiple angles, second photographers are there as backup in case something were to happen to me during your wedding.
I always shoot with two cameras that both have dual card slots, so every time I snap a photo, it gets saved to two separate memory cards in case one fails. Once your wedding is finished, I save all of your images to two separate hard drives.
The equipment I use make sure that I can create the visual esthetic that defines my style and that you never lose a single image due to equipment malfunction.
